Translation Management Systems: Independent or Captive Solutions?
What is a Translation Management System (TMS)?
A TMS is a web application that provides essential GMS (Globalization Management System) functions, including advanced linguistic technology, process automation, content repository integration and management services. A TMS simplifies and speeds localization processes for any content — from websites to documents to software. By automating many costly and time consuming activities, it eliminates delays in the availability of translated content, improves translation quality and lowers costs.
Captive TMS:
A captive TMS is a solution offered by a handful of localization service providers, who have developed their own proprietary tools that enhance language and process automation. Their TMS technology is offered, so long as the translation services are also bought from this individual provider, hence the term "captive" TMS. Upgrades and improvements to a captive TMS are driven by one single translation/tools provider. While those upgrades might be integrated faster, they could also be limited in scope.
Variable TMS:
Customers who prefer more flexibility will want to pursue variable TMS solutions. A variable TMS is not tied to its developer and can accommodate multiple translation vendors and/or allow for a change of vendors without having to adopt new technologies with every new vendor selection. Variable TMS upgrades and improvements are driven by many localization providers who deploy it and thus tend to be more comprehensive.
Who should consider a TMS?
Medialocate can present an independent view on this subject and provide recommendations to what might otherwise appear to be a daunting venture into automation technology. We have remained very flexible in our approach towards deploying TMS tools: we have developed our own client portal with basic TMS capabilities and we have acquired significant experience in working with a number of powerful TMS solutions available today.
